Last month, it was announced that, after many years of discussion, a third runway at Heathrow had been approved by MP's, with estimated completion by 2026. However lawyers acting for Heathrow Hub, a rival Heathrow expansion group, have put forward objections for the proposal.
According to a letter obtained by Sky News, the rival group proposes an expansion of one of the airports existing runways will be cheaper to build than a new runway and will cause less disruption for local villages and communities.
The letter also suggests the Department for Transport failed to provide details of the government's decision-making process under freedom of information laws and they will challenge the DfT on five principle grounds including air quality, climate impact and noise pollution.
The third runway project is thought to cost around £16 billion.
